October in Calabria: Why it’s the perfect month for a beach vacation

The climate: better than you expect
In October, Ionian Calabria experiences what meteorologists call the ‘Summer of San Martino’: sunny days with temperatures ranging between 22 and 26°C in the central hours of the day. Nights are cooler (15-18°C), ideal for sleeping without air conditioning. The sea maintains a temperature of 22-23°C throughout the first half of the month — warmer than many Italian beaches in midsummer.
The beaches: finally yours
In August the beaches of the Ionian coast are beautiful but crowded. In October, everything changes: you find free umbrellas everywhere, the beach staff is more relaxed and attentive, the waters are clear because there is no movement of boats and swimmers. A walk on Roccella Jonica beach on an October morning —with the sun low on the horizon and no one around— is one of the most rejuvenating experiences there is.
Prices: the advantage of the low season
Compared to the months of July and August, hotel prices drop by an average of 30-40% in October. The same goes for flights: those departing from Milan or Rome for Lamezia Terme in October often pay a third of what they spend in August. Considering that the quality of the experience is comparable (or superior) to that of summer, October represents the best value for money of the year.
